#IWD2019 - Music industry

It’s international women’s day today and we’re all here to celebrate and reflect on progress made over the years, alongside continue to protest in the fight for equality. This year’s theme is #balanceforbetter.

We’re here though to discuss those important women currently in the music industry. Those women currently shaping and improving the music industry and issues in today’s society. Never stop what you girls are doing!

* Lizzo

Lizzo is gaining more and more popularity each day. She is an icon in the music industry for her stance on body positivity and it’s hard to ignore the impact she’s having. She’s not afraid of fighting the current social norm in the industry of skinny whites girls. Thank you Lizzo.

"I’ve never been ‘sample size.' I’ll never be ‘sample size’ ... And I ain’t ‘plus sized’ I’m MY SIZE."

* Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has been around for long time now and has seen some controversial press about her. However, it cannot be ignored her fight against the male domination in music industry. Our favourite quote being

“Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you anymore.”

* Miley Cyrus

Miley is not shy about her views, she strongly believes there is double standard between men n women. She is fighting to change these norms. How can we forget her spin off feminist version of Santa baby? Empowerment through sexuality is a strong message behind the BBC weekender headliner.

"The only way to achieve beauty is to feel it from inside without breaking it down into individual physical attributes."

* Madonna

Cultural queen Madonna has had an impact of different generations but her message is still as strong as ever. She’s paved the way for new artists by defying musical norms, this was through her music, attitude clothing and lifestyle. She’s built a legacy and is still as important as ever.

“I’m tough, I’m ambitious, and I know exactly what I want. If that makes me a bitch, okay.”

* Lorde.

Lorde has used her gained platform in the industry to spread information and teach people more about Feminism. Evidently on social media this has a huge following. She’s not shy about it and rightly fully so! She recently sewed a feminist essay on her sleeve to document at the Grammys and spread the word.

Feminism is “trying to fight for better conditions and better treatment of all women, whether that be trans women, or women of color, or...women in professions that don't get a lot of respect."
